Arman

He is definitely a conceptual artist. He is an old man who has been in the game for a long time. He has many many different works. Some are sculptures, paintings, multipuls and other things. One painting that got to me was the one on the right called "Bloody Guns." It was done all the way back in 1965. That may not really be that old but when I think of the 60's I do not think of this. Although I suppose they are looking for something new then. Those days I guess they were more open to things. I am not sure what I think of his work. It did catch my attention but personally it doesnt look like something that took too much planning or talent. It is a 24" X 36" piece which is pretty big.

James Luna

I have to say that when I began to research James Luna I entered his website that seemed very over done and somewhat obnoxious. Who needs all of that color and buttons?? It was not very serious and as an artist I understand that he is trying to make a statement. He has an artist statement that talks about what people think of the Native American culture and how he was going to make people realize how silly the stereotype is. He does a very good job with the piece of himself on the right. I remember Lori talking about James getting out of the coffin and taking pictures with the crowd. After seeing his website and having a better idea about how obnoxious of an individual he is I can understand what he is trying to say about it. He is kind of a silly guy. I think he is just good at poking fun at it.

Annette Massager

Her art is based on the lives of women. She was born in 1945 and is somewhat of an activist for women. The individual elements of these catalogs are like small snapshots of the themes Messager deals with- issues of sexual and physical abuse, fragmentation of the body, sin, obsession with appearances, fairy tales, children, symbols, effigies, disguise, distortion, repetition. These all connect to issues surrounding women. The work is often executed using "women's" materials and techniques.

Erik Boker

This artist is by far one of the most interesting that I have researched. He is mainly a photographer. He travels around the world studying different cultures. He does a lot of different works that are like artifacts like the dissected toothpastes. Because he likes to study different cultures he understands that you need an inside look to learn about something. He has spent many years living in his car. He has several different degrees from colleges in arts and photography. He has even received a ton of awards and has his work displayed in well over 30 places. That is impressive.. he seems to me to be a true artist at heart.

Paho Mann

Paho Mann is known for his ability to create art simply by sorting. Things are sorted by size, location, etc. The ability to organize and re-organize the images on Sort serves to connect the physical reality of consumption and ownership with the more expansive data reality of online consumption of information. This convergence allows each reality to expand the dialogue of the other – the database driven website expands the ability to compare and contrast objects in the physical world and the objects provide a concrete limit-set from which to address the ever expanding pool of data available to consumers.
I personally have a hard time seeing this as true art. It falls in the conceptual category in which I find hard to understand.

Marc Quinn

He is the artist that cast a face in blood. This sculpture was placed into a refrigerated case. Once the electricity was cut off the sculpture was found ruined the next day. I think this is absolutely disgusting but I have to say I respect his ability to do something completely out of the ordinary. This first portrait was created in 1990 and then again in 1995. I am not sure if he has stuck to his word but he said he planned on creating one every five years.

Kiki Smith

She is the woman who created the chocolate sculpture by eating it. She made a sculpture with soap by bathing with it.
The work on the left is called Hanging Woman. Kiki tends to do a lot of work that is dark and deranged. She likes to create madness and trauma. Personally her work is too dark for me and I cant say that I really like it. I do however respect that I can grasp what she is getting at and it does cause emotion.
